[Lookback]: The Year in Coffee and Cafes

In 1918, Shanghai had one coffeeshop. A hundred years later, and how the landscape has changed. Coffee is on a tear across China, and its home base is right here in Shanghai. By some counts, the city now has more than 7,000 coffee shops, with more than 3,000 of those shops in downtown alone. It is more than any other city in China, by a few thousand. In 2018, we added almost 100 Starbucks alone, bringing the Shanghai total to more than 700, the highest number of any city in the world. But just because they serve...

[Lookback]: The Drunk’s Guide to 2018

Shanghai’s bar scene began to fill up again in 2018. Saturation. Maturation. Masturbation. About 40 new places opened that were noteworthy and sometimes even excellent temples to libations. If you are doing the accounting, that’s around twice as many significant closures we saw this year. Two steps forward, indeed. What happened at the bar? There is peace of mind in Shanghai. It’s on Shaanxi Bei Lu, and it starts when the throws the most zen slumber party ever: a 30-hour silent retreat open to anyone interested in learning to meditate with the monks. It’s the first lesson: we are all equal, and we are all in this together. Jade Buddha Temple was founded in 1882, a modest shack built around two jade statues from Burma. In recent years the temple has been renovated and now has 20 structures in a large compound, including a “hotel” on the fourth-floor of the monks’ living quarters. It’s arguably the city’s most famous and most touristed temple. And for three years, it has allowed guests to stay overnight to study the “art of zen” for 350rmb. Lessons are provided by two monks in Chinese only, but...

Art for April Holiday: teamLab, Tobias Rehberger, Sol LeWitt

So many art shows! So many galleries and art museums in Shanghai have something new to offer! In Huangpu, the mediums and the concept of art are redefined, and boundaries are crossed. A real abundance of art this month. *** Close Your Eyes and Drink This Daily except Mon until May 26 2019 Tobias Rehberger: If you don’t use your eyes to see, you...
